No spoilers. 1 star. I'm rating this book 1 regrettable star because that is as low as I can go and leave a review...The quirkiness of the book's synopsis drew me in but... I made a big mistake giving it a go...The story starts with a young hospital security guard sneaking down into the basement morgue to have sex with a newly dead woman...... his encounter was very detailed and at one point, during the act, there was an interesting yet gross bit involving corpse gas...A little further on, the man meets and becomes involved with a female maternity doctor who he catches sneaking down to the morgue to eat a dead newborn...There is subtle flirtation between the two but the guard is still repulsed sexually by her and she, for her part, is constantly glassy-eyed and drugged up... she's too warm, too wet, too alive for his taste...The story moves along a little slowly and repetitively until the doctor takes the guard to an abortion clinic one night, after hours, where she is head doctor...... this happens at about the 60% mark and then it became disgusting and unreadable for me and I abandoned the rest of the story. I can't get into stories about animal or child abuse...I can't think of one person that I would feel comfortable about recommending this book to and who would enjoy it. Until now, I thought THE SLOB by Aron Beauregard was the grossest book I've ever read but this one takes the honors!Warnings are due here: if abuse of children (dead or alive) isn't your thing then skip this one. I wish I had. Let me first state that I’ve been waiting to get my hands on this ever since it was announced as an upcoming Deadite Press title.So I’ve had to wait for some time to read Dead Inside because of all the ensuing controversy surrounding it.And during that wait my mind had hyped this book up to a lofty height, so high in fact I was worried that it wouldn’t live up to my hopes. Well it didn’t , it surpassed it!I should realize now that when it comes to horror, in Chandler Morrison we trust! The man has an unblemished record when it comes to his written output thus far.I feel to go into this book blind is the best way so I will not be regurgitating ( Pun intended ) the synopsis or plot so that you, gentle reader can have your mind properly blown to smithereens.I will however touch on a few things that I fancied.I absolutely loved our humble narrator even if we don’t ever learn his name. He is a man of extreme taste I’ll put it, but he is also hysterically hilarious with some truly brilliant lines throughout.He is repellent and likable all at once.Helen is are other main character. The maternity doctor with a hunger for a decidedly “unique delicacy.”Her un-relationship with our narrator is both surprisingly sad/demented and touching at the same time. I seriously hoped they would persevere but at the end of the day this is an extreme horror story and no happy endings will be had for our demented duo.And color me shocked that I went into an extreme horror story for the gore and depravity but came out loving the bond that our two unlikely anti heroes forged.It was really touching in a lot of ways that this man had built this fortress of solitude for himself that no one could enter and yet somehow Helen found a crack and snuck in, imbedding herself into his life and feelings like a tick. If he ever could “feel love”, this was the closest he could probably ever get for him.Watching the the narrator slowly “fall” for Helen in his own way while being sickened of the thought of embracing normalcy was very entertaining.I really felt Chandler made a albeit hardcore and extreme, modern take on Vladimir Nobokav’s iconic “Lolita,” even giving a knowing wink by having our humble narrator take Helen out to a restaurant named Nobokav!It’s a very impressive job as both works help give their characters a chance to still be human and for the reader to care for them although their relationships are all taboo and unacceptable.Now with all of that said if you’re just searching for a book that will knock your socks off then look no further. This book is meaner than a wicker basket full of pissed off vipers, and it’s got a bite to match.There are scenes in this book that will mess you up . There is a show-stopping sex scene from Hell at two different parts that will feel like someone threw bleach in your eyes, blinding you with pure unadulterated debauchery, it’s that wicked and insane!It’s also filled with Chandler’s impeccable wit and literary style that is just beautiful and a pure joy to read.Highly recommend to those that can handle the depravity.I’ll end this with the Poe quote that is paraphrased by our humble narrator: “ There’s nothing more poetic than the death of a beautiful woman”.
